Pictures From Our Last Day

Thank you, and be safe!

To my students,

Thank you for a wonderful class last Wednesday. Congratulations to Quwanna for Most Improved Reader and Jesus for Most Improved Writer. Congratulations to Jesus and Esther for Best Attendance. Also, praise to Quwanna, Jesus, and David for cycling out of our program into GED programs. Overall, I am proud of everyone for their dedication to our class and improvement!

We had another delicious feast, reflecting the generosity of our class members. I will have the photos up soon.

Remember if you are returning for the Fall Cycle, come to the library on 9/13 at 5pm with your score slip so you can reserve your spot in class.

Be safe during this hurricane-- hoping you find a safe place to go, as I know many of you live in the evacuation areas.
All my best to you, and please stay in touch!

Congratulations to...

To the graduates of the Spring 2011 cycle: Congratulations on 10 weeks of persistence and hard work. This time of year can be a difficult time to remain consistent, as the weather is beautiful-- I'm sure you would have much rather been on the Boardwalk than in the library. You came to class until the end and improved so much.

A special congratulations to Eric Turnage, Hajrie Demushi, Sondra Brewer, and Irene Vuong who have placed into GED programs. WE WILL MISS YOU and hope you will stay in touch with us as you get your GEDs soon. Irene made the biggest improvement, increasing by over 4 reading levels. Well done, Irene!

Additional praise goes to Jesus Gonzalez for achieving PERFECT ATTENDANCE with 60 hours.
Sam Delshad improved the most in our class in math, scoring 1.5 points higher at the end of the cycle. We hope to see you again next cycle, Sam!

Respect and Disipline

Hi every one! this is sam
Respect & Disipline, These two words sound ordinary, but actually they have prominent
meaning and rule in our lives.
It has been years and years olders teaching their youngers
to have respect and disipline in their lives
always elders and olders expect to be respected by youngers.
"respect and Disipline" although these words don't need any language to speak,
they could be shown or expressed by your quality appearance.
IF you think deeply, this world stands up for these
words: To Respect, love and to show Disipline.

Your homework for Monday is to reread the editorial about overweight Canadians and score it according to the rubric I gave you today. You should have a grade for the lede, persuasive argument, research, paragraphs, spelling, and punctuation.

Also, think of a topic that you would like to write an editorial about. It should be about something that affects the public and that you can research from at least 3 sources.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Hi karen!

Thanks for your compliments karen.
I agree with you.people who don't work hard enough-
and missed their opportunities that they have or they had,I also don't support them.
But I am talking about the poor people who never had the opportunity to do somthing.
Those undeveloped countries or people who are suffering from poverty is because of lack of Education.
In my point of view,To have control on poverty is to increase or provide the facilities of Education and good environment into those countries.
By getting people Educated the country gets developed, the economy gets better and there will be more jobs.
The people can live a happy and moderate life.
folks, Knowledge is the light of life that keeps you away from darkness.

Thanks Karen

It bugs me --when thinking about grammar

Grammar bothers me all the time , so do the most non- native speakers I guess.
Although I had been taking grammar classes for 10 months a year and half ago, and I felt I was pretty clear after that course, but I weren't.
For Chinese people maybe more difficult, because in our language, we don't have tense, we don't change verbs at anytime, we don't need worry about singular and plural, they are all same .
However,I like English, it's a beautiful language.
I wish I could speak perfect English just like you and the other native speakers in our class someday in the future.
I checked the website you suggested in your blog, it's so helpful and useful , I'm leaning it,thank you.

Help with Verbs and Grammar

http://www.eslbee.com/verb_tenses.htm

I originally commented these links to Irene's post below, but I also thought the class would appreciate them for help with grammar.

Hi Sam

We had wonderful classes at Mon&Wed,we learnt 10 new vocabularies, they were : acute, anonymous, apprehensive, arrogant, bestow, donor, prominent, phobia, recipient and prudent.
Do you know any of these? Try to remember these words,we will probably use them to write something like last time at next class on Mon.
We also learnt how to recognize what was opinion and what was fact in a editorial,it was very useful.
Sorry you missed the classes, hope you will show up on Mon.

Using words that I had learnt

I had written a story instead a sentence in the class today
I have started reading my sixth book since I'm taking this class,
it really surpass my expectation,I would never conceive I could do this before taking the class.
I'm eager to learn and read as well as enjoin it.
I hate language inhibit me to find a job that is my passion just like what I had done in Beijing.
I like to work,it's not for supplement income for the family, believe it or not,I was a workaholic, got out my house at 9 in the morning, came bake at 2 in the middle of night every single day,no weekend,no holiday.
However, life is changing, and I derived happiness from what I have now, that could compensate what I had lost.

Sam

Hi every one,
If i could change any thing in the world,
i would finish poverty....
so that no body would have been in need of something,
or nothing would inhibit them from achieving their goals.
that really makes me feel very sad, Specially when i hear or watch programs about poor and needy people.
they can not afford to feed their children.they raise their childern in a different world, a world that is out
of Education, good environment and healthy food.
It is all because of poverty.i am very thankful to those Organizations that help these poeple.
folks if i could do anything i would really finish poverty.

Things I feel upset

The things make me feel upset are not wars or
corruption, I hate those though.
Something that makes me feel really upset is I have to leave my world behind.
the world I love
the world where I was born and grew up;
I left my parents and friends behind,
they mean everything to me
we shared fear, grief, joy and love together
I like living here, this is the new world to me
I like my beautiful new house,my lovely dog, the environment, the kindness people.....
the problem is I can't have them all at the sane time
This is really upset.

Hi Jesus, the poem you wrote was just beautiful

I read it as soon as I came back from the class last night.
I read it twice.
It was just so beautiful, natural, and I feel I could see it.
I like it very much.
That makes me want a baby badly

i do not know why my other friends they do not share their comments.
i know every body is busy in NY, but not that busy to to forget friends.
ok never mind my dear class mates. enjoy your life because this is the gift of God.

My dog-- YOYO

I hate raining, because it makes me have more work to do to take my dog Yoyo out

First, I need put his blue rain boots on which are four,
and put his rain coat on which I made from big white plastic bag and made five holes for his head and feet.
He looks funny and cute
People always laughed and asked me very next day after rain: Is that the dog wore rain boots yesterday?
Yoyo became famous dog at the area where I live by his costume .

The Person I Admire the Most: My Mom

My mother cries, I see her tears drop. Some theft took all her money, but again and again, my mother tried. My mother worked very hard to make her living. After sending us off to school, she would go to corination market. Located in the heart of downtown Kingston, Jamaica, where she would but and sell oranges, bananas, and sweet sugar cane. It wasn't easy lifting all those loads and staying up late just to make a profit, but she had no other alternative because of the little education she received. Coming home one night my mother was robbed and compelled to give up all her money, my mother cried but again she tried. My fahter passed away when me and my twin brother was just 8 months old. It was very hard taking care of twins; I was very sickly and had to rush from one hospital to next. My mother almost gove up on me because taking care of a sick child and raising eight children without a father was hard, but my mother held her ground she was always around. Sometimes it's heart breaking hearing my mother reminisced about her passed, and all she went through for us. My mother never let us down. It was December 2,1992 when my mother migrated to the U.S, she was in her senoir years, but in six months she filed for us. It took us seven years to get to the U.S, but my mother was always optimistic, and for that reason time flies. Here we are today thanking mom for the opportunities and experience she gave us. The person I admire the most is my mother, because she raised us without a father. She worked very hard to send us to school, put food on the table, and in her senoir years took us all to the U.S. Sorry mom I have no PHD or a lawyers degree, but i will see to it that my children your grandchildren does not forget your legacy. So mom smile and sit back because you have accomplished alot." I am very proud of you MOM"!

GHANA AN INTERESTING PLACE TO BE.

Ghana is a beautiful country with gold, diamond and many other minerals but what really makes Ghana special is its diverse and culturally warm atmosphere which touches and embraces everyone.if you have never been to Ghana before,"Akwaaba!" Ghana welcomes you.
Ghana is located in the west Africa near the equator and on the Greenwich meridian. And is bordered on the north by Burkina Faso, on the west by Cote d'voire on the east by Togo and on the south by the Gulf of Guinea.
The colonial power that rule Ghana until their day of independence was the Britain. The Portuguese were the first to arrive and they named the place where they settled the Gold Coast. This became the name of the country till independence when it was changed to Ghana. Ghana was the first black African country to gain independence on the 6th March 1957. Dr Kwame Nkumah was the first prime minister of Ghana and in his first speech said Ghana your beloved country is free forever. The flag of Ghana consist of red, gold and green stripe with a black star in the center of the gold stripe. The red represents the blood of those who died in the country's struggle for independence, gold stand for the minerals wealth, while green symbolized the rich forest. The black star represent the lone star of African Freedom.
The country's economy is dominated by agriculture, which employs about 40 percent of the working population. Ghana is one the leading exporters of cocoa in the world. It is also a significant exporter of commodities such as gold and lumber.Ghana has an estimated population of 23 million, drawn from more than one hundred ethnic groups each with its own unique language. The education system is constantly improving and so the growth in tourism.Ghana has several tourist attractions such as the castles,Forts, wildlife protected Areas, national park, museum and the Volta lake. There really is no best time to visit Ghana,as the temperature is always Africa hot and if rainfall doesn't soak you, then the humid air will.if you prefer your soaking tropical in nature, stick close to the beaches.whatever the season, the weather gets more arid the farther inland you go.Village specific festivals and event occur throughout the year.
I end my essay by singing our national Anthem that says God bless our homeland Ghana.

The Teachers Association made a proposal about their salary and they presented it to the education minister and it was in the news that both the Minister of information and Education Minister has deleted some aspect of the proposal made by the teachers before sending it to the president. The minister of Information was so naive and started making an unecessary comment on the radio and that push the lenient teachers in the country whose salary has not been paid for about three months now.but it was overt that the teachers were on strike and the Education service menace some members of the teachers Association if they don't go back to classroom to teach or face their own disciplinary mechanism being applied to them. But some members of the Teachers Association undermined their leaders and started going to classroom to teach. It was true that the teachers were seeking for their legitimate single spine salary structure which the government promise to pay 15% percentage of Teacher Retention premium.
But with the integrity of some council of states and the chiefs the teachers has now call off the strike and the council of states and the chiefs has giving the teachers morale that they are going to talk the president.Because the polices are receiving the single spine salary,so the government should not be impartial but rather be fair to all government workers.

Vocabulary words, Fiction story

You would not believe what aday i had today, dining with my father and sister Betty. My father love's her better than me, as we sat to eat in the dining room there is a big yellow fan that illuminate the room.

My sister is pampered by my father, whether she is good or not. When I'm told to do something I comply to my father's rule, but with Betty he has to compel her. Yet her punishment was never drastic. That is a reminder that I'm not my fathers favorite and never will be.

I acknowledge I'm not as pretty as my sister, 'but candid thats me'. As my father continues to pick at my faults, I shut him out and pretended I am having a dialog over the phone with my friends.

As I was about to isolate myself from the table, my father called me back and start to reminisce about his obedient to his parents when he was my age. As father shift his black eyes to me I sank in my chair hearing him telling me I forfeit my night out with my friends, because i gave him deaf ear.

Betty shout out ' punish her' she was conise that makes me mad, but I was trying to avert the situation and rest my head on the table, thinking my father is nothing like my mother. She dresses appropriate and speak with a soft tone. She is from the country.

My father is a urban man, loud and full of excitement, I have an alternative never to married a man like my father. I glimps of father as he tried to fortify himself with the punch mother made. He is so erratic with his behavoir, love me one minute hate me the next.

Suddenly there was a nock at the door, miss brown came over, she is our neighbor. It was my chance to take refuge in moms room, she was doing an extencive cleaning. I listen as father told miss Brown anecdote. He loves to talk thats my father. My day today was a disappointed one.

Story For Wed, 3/09/ 11

You would not believe what a day I had. I was in the city getting a suit for my brother's wedding and I seen some urban suits. But, since I got my suit...I am satisfied. When I was on my way home, my niece called me after she got out of school telling me that she was isolated from the rest of the class because she didn't focus on her work. It started to rain before I went to the train station, so I needed refuge to protect me from the rain. While I was waiting for the rain to slow down I called my brother to see if he made anyone else forfeit in the video game. After a few minutes, I had no choice but to hang up on this erratic conversation because he started talking about non-sense. (10 minutes later the train arrived at the train station) I stepped on the train and sat down. I was being nosey and listening to 2 girls reminiscing about a dialog they had yesterday. When I was walking home from the train station I forgot that I have extensive amount of paper work to do for class today. But, as soon as I got home, I went to the fridge to get some food or snacks to fortify my focus so I can finish my papers. Since, all the lights were off, I had to turn them on to illuminate the house while I finish up my papers for tomorrow. So, the next day came. I woke up with a smile on my face because I finished my paper(s) for school while going through the worst yesterday. :)

On the Eve of christmas day, i happened to in a cab with two other boys who were travelling to spend the christmas holidays in Asiakwa. This was the dialog that went on in the Taxi Cab;
First guy......Do u REMINISCE our previous expedition in the URBAN?
Second guy...Yes i do.We were lucky to have found REFUGE when our vehicle broke down very close to the bridge.
First guy....On a brighter side, I think the soccer match we witnessed is an eveent which ILLUMINATES the christmas holidyas every year.
Second guy....Yes,I think so but it was marked by ERRATIC shooting upfront which made the home team FORFEIT the trophy.
First guy....there was also EXTENSIVE jubilations from supporters of the away side. One ugly incident was that of the referee. He was attacked immediately by the home side when he blew his final whistle.
Driver......I think the best thing was for the security present to ISOLATE the referee from the supporters or better still, FORTIFY their number at the venue to bring the situation under control.

I laughed out loud and they asked me why I was laughing.I answered..."I was at the stadium too"

The Father I Never Met

It's friday no money no house no land
But only bills in my hand
All you gave us is your name
Say you want your son a lawyer
Your girl a nurse bit no money to mom
Poor woman with twin's living on strings
She said you love us but mention
Other children with your name
Oh you hard heart
What should the poor woman do?
were yo like a monkey jumping around
Or life was just a game for you
Poor woman with twin's living on strings
No picture of you kissing my cheek
Or patting me to sleep
As if I was born in the 17th century
Was there no camera's
No doctor no record
taking care of self did not matter to you
Did you really love us
Your not here to say i do
But there is a record god has account on you

Short Story

Today in life we try to avert situations but also try to comply with what we are asked. We all acknowledge that while some are compel without a choice other do have alternative. I for one am very candid and feel that i do have alot to say. If we were to listen to anecdote before our time you will hear about the drastic events that took place all because alot of us were to concise.

FORGIVING MY FATHER.

FOR ALL THE TIMES
YOU WERE ADDICTED TO DRUGS
THE ENTIRE TIME I WAS GROWING UP
I FORGIVE YOU

FOR ALL THE TIMES
YOU WERE NEVER AROUND
NEITHER WAS MY MOM
BUT A BOY NEEDS HIS FATHER
A LITTLE MORE THAN HIS MOM
I FORGIVE YOU

FOR ALL THE TIMES
DESPITE THE HEARTACHE AND CRAP
YOU PUT ME THROUGH
I FORGIVE YOU

FOR ALL THE TIMES
THE PAIN AND ANGER I'VE HAD IN MY LIFE
I WISH YOU WERE NEAR
THE TEARS THAT FELL FROM MY EYES
I STILL LOVE YOU
I FORGIVE YOU.

Vocabulary words

Some parents will not acknowledge that they make mistakes. in raising their children. It can be hard for them to be candid when the damage is already done. But as children we must help them dont avert them, love them be gentle and let them tell their part like anecdote. Some parents growing up as children have no voice back then, they were compel to do things they refused to do. Their punishment would be drastic. We have a alternative now to be the best parents we can be. As parents we must not nag out children, we should be concise when correcting them, using appropriate words to address them. And if we do they will comply with our rules, and stay in school and be cool.

Hello!

Hello, everyone!

It is nice to see you all using the blog and learning more about all of you. Here are some things about me:

1. My mom is from the Philippines and my dad is from Thailand.

2. I am hoping to go back to school for my Ph.D. soon.

3. I am going to Puerto Rico in May for a wedding in Condado, San Juan. Where are my Puerto Ricans??? What are the "must-sees"? I'm looking for recommendations that the guide books won't have. I LOVE FOOD and nature, so any suggestions related to these things would be appreciated!
