Welcome New and Returning Students!

Hello!

Welcome to the Winter 2011 Cycle of our Pre-GED class at Coney Island. We will be learning about how to post on the blog in the coming weeks, but for now, this is a site that has resources to help you on your path to getting your GED.

Please see the information below for some events going on at the library-- especially if you are looking for a job or want financial help.

Let me know if you have any questions!

BPL Partnership with Workforce1

There is a hiring event this week for those of you looking for jobs. Students should have a resume and be ready to answer questions from employers. Several of the sales positions do not require a GED/High School Diploma and there are listings specifically requesting students with bilingual skills.

Right now we are not doing formal referrals to Workforce1. If your students are actively looking for work and have a resume, encourage them to visit a Workforce1 Center in Brooklyn. http://www.nyc.gov/html/sbs/wf1/html/locations/brooklyn.shtml

Education Job and Information Center (EJIC) at Central Library

EJIC has an extensive collection of career and education resources and computers available for job seekers. EJIC staff offer free resume help every week. EJIC also offers a job seekers club and special workshops on topics such as such as finding government jobs, college and career planning, writing resumes on the computer and using your foreign degree in the United States. They also generate referral lists for job training, internships and educational resources around New York City. For more information, see their page on the website http://www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/ejic.jsp or call 718.230.2177.

Growing Dollars and $ense

This program offers free workshops and financial counseling for teens and adults on a range of topics including smart investing, banking, smart shopping and retirement planning. For upcoming workshops see: http://www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/growingdollars/.
