Cheating Death Groceries

It was a warm day in 1986 when I was only 8 years old. The smell of spring was in the air and the sky was bright blue. At 3 p.m I have gotten out of school. The school I went to was P.S. 329 located at Mermaid Avenue between West 29th Street and West 30th Street just around the block of my home. When I got home I took my books out of my book bag and started my homework. When I was doing my math homework. My Grandmother was preparing dinner. The smell of her cooking was making me hungry. My grandma called me from the kitchen "Jose can you go to the supermarket to get some items for dinner when you're done" I answered yes. After 15 minutes I finished my homework and I was ready to go. I told my Grandmother that I was done with my homework. She gave me a list of things to get from the supermarket. When I went outside it was still warm but breezy . I walked on Surf Avenue towards the supermarket that was called Associated. I looked for the things that my grandmother had put on the list. I never realized how many things she needed. When I left the supermarket I was carrying two bags of groceries.Imagine how heavy it was for an eight year to carry groceries. As I walked home I saw a elderly man walking with two dogs. Both dogs were huge but seem friendly. I kept looking at the dogs then I saw a man by himself. I kept walking passing the elderly man with the two friendly dogs. The man who was by himself pulled out a gun and started to shoot. The shot was loud as hell.I stood there for a few seconds just shocked and scared. The shooter fled the scene. Everyone including the elderly man and his 2 dogs left running from the scene. Instead of running for my life.I walked back home with the groceries just thinking of what happened. I walked through my door. My grandmother asked me, "Jose are you fine? Thank goodness you are safe" Afterward she was so sorry for sending me to the store and gave me a big hug. When I looked out of the window I had realized that I Cheated my death with two bags of groceries.

Wow, Jose, this story is so moving and shocking. The fact that this happened to you when you were only 8 years old is unbelievable. You were such a brave little boy.

I really liked the dialogue and setting description you added. I felt like I was in Coney Island in 1986. I'd like for you to think about character description. Can you tell us more about what the shooter looked like? I also was wondering about internal monologue. What were you thinking and feeling was this was all happening? Let's get inside your head!

Keep working hard! You are doing exceptional work this cycle!
