Thank you to everyone who posted their writing pieces and comments to classmates. Make sure you read the comments that folks made to your writing piece so that you make your piece better.
A suggestion for commenting:
1. Start with something positive! Is there a particular line that your classmate wrote that you liked? Tell why you liked it. Pointing out what you LIKE will help your classmate know what to keep doing in his/her writing.
Be specific:
Example: instead of "I like your piece", say "I like your piece because you wrote about details from growing up. That helps me know more about you. I want to do that in my writing too."
2. End with a suggestion on how your classmate can improve his/her writing.
Example: "I'd love to know more about...." or "I had trouble understanding...maybe you can...."
Remember, we are here to motivate and challenge each other to grow as writers and readers. Let me know if you have trouble!

My Name:
In my religion we believe that god has one hundred names .As-salaam is one of them,it means the peace. And abd means servant or servant of ,and so abdussalaam means servant of god or servant of the peace.
I like my name because one general belief in my religion is that we are all servant's of God, and so I feel that I have something in common with most of, if not all of them.
"My Name"
My name is Angie, which is a somewhat short version of my mothers name Angelica. I'm her last born of 10 children, makes me feel special. I reflect my mom more than any other of my other brothers or sisters strong, independent and caring. My mom raised all her children on her own with really no help from our dad. That was a challenge she faced. She always said we were going to be ready for WAR. She taught us how to do everything on our own. She would say "I'm not going to be here forever so you need to take care of yourselves and each other". She never showed us the hardship and struggle she went through. That really inspired me to be the strong independent women I am today. I am raising my two daughters the same way. I'm so proud they are great kids! I have taken a lot of my moms characteristics. My older brothers and sisters respect me for the good job I'm doing.
It means messenger of God and an angel in Greek and Latin. I would say that fits me pretty well. I am a mystery, something like out of the normal or invisible. People can sense a strong presence from me in a good way, interesting! I'm very spiritual and passionate. I have a purpose. I ask myself "What is life?" for me my children, family and friends with out any of them what would it be? It's love really. My heart is full of love. Life for me is a walk in the park on a sunny day and just enjoying the beauty that surrounds us all. That's the meaning of my life.
I am happy with my name. It's what it was meant to be. Just wish I would of gotten a middle name like Faith or Joy. That would of made my name more complete.

My name is Izolda. It doesn't have any means on my native language. When I was born,my parents thought too long ,before to name me. All names, which in my community were using they didn't like. Finally they named me Izolda.
Izolda means beautiful on old Celtic language. Also it was the name of the princess of Ireland in the legend of ''Tristan and Isolde''. Its about an impossible love ,like''Romeo and Juliette'', ''Isolde the bride of the king of Cornwall,Mark ,who fell in love with the king's nephew Tristan, after they mistakenly drank a love potion...''
I like my name. But,when I was young, I wished to change it. Right now I don't remember
''why?''. And,I don't wanna change it anymore!
It is a tradition to give your name to one of your grandkids in my community. So,I'll do.
Izolda is nice and sonorously name, also,I think, all girl names are nice and beautiful.Just, love yourself and be happy with.

Coney Island Name History
For those who missed the discussion on how Coney Island got its name:
The name
Coney Island, c. 1914, by Edward Henry Potthast
Native American inhabitants, the Lenape, called the island Narrioch[citation needed] (land without shadows), because, as is true of other south shore Long Island beaches, its compass orientation keeps the beach area in sunlight all day.[citation needed] The Dutch name for the island was Conyne Eylandt (Konijnen Eiland in modern Dutch spelling),[2] meaning Rabbit Island. This name is found on the New Netherland map of 1639 by Johannes Vingboon. (New York State and New York City were originally a Dutch colony and settlement, named Nieuw Nederlandt and Nieuw Amsterdam.) As on other Long Island barrier islands, Coney Island had many and diverse rabbits and rabbit hunting prospered until resort development eliminated their habitat.
It is generally accepted by scholars[3][4] that Coney Island is an English adaptation of the Dutch name, Konijnen Eiland. Coney is also an obsolete and dialectal English word for rabbit. Coney came into the English language through Old French (Conil), which derives from the Latin word for rabbit, cuniculus. The English name "Conney Isle" was used on maps as early as 1690,[5] and by 1733 the modern spelling "Coney Island" was used.[6] J.F.W. des Barre's chart of New York harbor in the Atlantic Neptune, 1779,[7] and John Eddy map of 1811 both use the modern "Coney Island" spelling.[8]
Even though the history of Coney Island's name and its Anglicization can be traced through historical maps spanning the 17th century to the present,[9] and all the names translate to "Rabbit Island" in modern English, there are still those who contend that the name derives from other sources. Some say that early English settlers named it Coney Island after its cone-like hills. Others claim that an Irish captain named Peter O'Connor had, in the 1700s, named Coney Island after an island (Inishmulclohy) in County Sligo, Ireland. Yet another purported origin is from the name of the Indian tribe (the Konoh tribe) who supposedly once inhabited it. A further claim is that the island is named after Henry Hudson's "right-hand-man" John Coleman, supposed to have been slain by Indians.[10]

MY NAME.My name means respect for youth. In hispanic countries there are different ways to write it.Juventino, Juvenal, Juventus and Juvencio. It's hard for the americans to say it right. They call me Juvenito, Juven or sometimes they give up so easily to say it. they want me to give, as they call it an usual name. So i tell them to call me Fernando. In Mexico the letter J has diferent sound( hoo) for ju.I've been name named after my father. it's a little funny because . When my mom took me to be baptise , the priest asked her what's my name? She didn't know how to name me; she wasn't even pick a name for me! So my Aunt told her to name after my father's name.As I told you, my name Juventino came from the word juventud or joven meaning Young.I wish! I stay all the time like my name means "YOUNG" to bad years pass and getting older is the rule of live.

The name GABRIELA is not a common name and this is more interesting where it comes. The name Gabriela comes from the hebrew origin. In Hebrew the meaning of the name is "God of able- bodied one". this is a femine of Gabriel . My name means "God is my might" . Most people would imagine a person with the name Gabriela to be funny, friendly, and feminine woman. But in one word you might describe Gabriela as feminine person. I think the name Gabriela should fall under the following style category : ladylike. The name gabriella (some countries write like it) is originates from italian language , and the common nicknames of gabriela or gabriella are Gaby, Gabi or Gab. in my opinion I like when people call me Gaby is short and sound cool .I like my name but it is large but don't care because mom put this name becuse sound sexy and sensual that"s dad told me . My name means King Henry the Eighth Sir Anthony Denny. In Latin, my first name means highly praiseworthy. Famous beaver: Mark Antony, Roman triumir and general who shared a throne with Queen Cleopatra of Egypt. In Greek, my first name means priceless.
My number is 7. The characteristics of #7 are Analysis, understanding, knowledge awareness, studious, meditating. There are 7 letters in my name. A Soul Urge number of 7 means with a number 7 Soul Urge. I am very fond of reading, and retreating to periods of being alone and away from the distruptions of the outer world. I like to dream and develop my idealistic understandings, to study and anaylze, to gain knowledge and wisdom. I may be too laid back and withdrawn to really succeed in the businessworld, and I will be much more comfortable in circumstances that are tolerant of my reserve, my analytical approach, and my desire to use my mind rather very quickly.
My Inner dream is 9.
An Inner dream number of 9 mean I dream of being creative, intellectual, and universal, the selfless humanitarian. I understand the needy and want to help them. I would love to be a person people count on for support and device.
My name creates an interest in the deeper aspects of life, we emphasize that it limits self-expression and friendly congeniality with a moody disposition. My name gives me a clever, quick analytical mind, but I suffer with a great deal of self- consciouness, lack of confidence, and much aloneness because of misunderstandings
My mom's side is from the Carolinas in the U.S. My mom's culture is African American. My mom was born in New York. My dad's side is from Trinidad. My dad's culture is Trinidadian, but he was born and raised in New York.

My Name
Ever since i was 13 i was so interested where my name came from.So of course i asked my mom and this is what she said"oh i named you after my best friend Cynthia''.So of course I asked my mom,and she said"oh I named you after my bestfriend Cynthia".I thought my name was special, like from a Greek or Romain time, so i thought.
I would've preferred a different name like "Sydney"or "Harmony". A name that when a person hears it for the first time, takes a deep breath and has a smile as big as the verazano bridge.I would love to here them say "wow your name is so beautiful"not "oh ok hi". I would've liked if my name was planned and searched for. Except "I'm gonna call her ......UH"and look around the room for whom or what ever.I would've rather my mother be more interested about my name.
So I searched for my name and found out that it really was Greek (but i'm sure my mom did'nt know about that either). The meaning is "from mount kynthos".(greek terms)So as i read on,Great Britain's Queen Elizabeth I(1533-1603)was not married, but compared to Artemis.Who was the goddess and purity ,which was understood as the virtues of the Virgin Queen.
Therefore i really don't like my name, but not only because I just don't like it.I just take it as I was'nt a planed baby ,so my name was'nt either.Thats why i perffered any other name but my because really i guess it did'nt matter what name i was going to be.

Post and Comment Assignment
Just a reminder that I am asking everyone to write a new post at least once per week and comment on another person's post at least once per week. Posting and commenting helps us to practice computer skills, connects us to other people, and encourages us to read and think about our classmates' thoughts. We will learn how to post and comment this week in class. Hope to see you braving this terrible weather by joining us in class this evening!

Homework Due This Fri. 1/29
Hello, all-
Please continue working on your writing piece about your name. Your first draft is due next Wednesday. It should be typed on the blog for others to read and comment on.
Remember that GREAT writing contains the following:
1. Details (does your writing include the answers to questions that a reader might ask about who, what, where, when, why, and how? does your writing invoke the five senses- hearing, taste, smell. sight, touch?)
2. Imagination (is your writing interesting? do you take risks?)
3. Heart/Passion (is your writing personal and from the heart?)
Remember, like Sandra Cisneros' chapter My Name, you are writing not just about your name but about YOU, your culture, your family, your language, and your feelings. We will work on this more on Monday. Please send your questions if you have any to me at karenbhanna@gmail.com or post on the blog. If you sse a question on the blog, feel free to answer it- we are all here to help each other.
See you on Monday,
Karen
