Homework Due This Fri. 1/29

Hello, all-

Please continue working on your writing piece about your name. Your first draft is due next Wednesday. It should be typed on the blog for others to read and comment on.

Remember that GREAT writing contains the following:

1. Details (does your writing include the answers to questions that a reader might ask about who, what, where, when, why, and how? does your writing invoke the five senses- hearing, taste, smell. sight, touch?)
2. Imagination (is your writing interesting? do you take risks?)
3. Heart/Passion (is your writing personal and from the heart?)

Remember, like Sandra Cisneros' chapter My Name, you are writing not just about your name but about YOU, your culture, your family, your language, and your feelings. We will work on this more on Monday. Please send your questions if you have any to me at karenbhanna@gmail.com or post on the blog. If you sse a question on the blog, feel free to answer it- we are all here to help each other.

Classes will begin the first week of February and will run until the third week of June.
There are three course times available:

8:30 am - 11:00 am Monday thru Friday
12:30 am - 3:00 am Monday thru Friday
4:00 pm - 8:00 pm Monday and Wednesday

Homework Due Next Wed. 1/20

Again, I am so glad to have seen so many returning faces and a couple of new faces on Day 2 of our class. Keep up the excellent attendance, everyone.

Please bring the following assignments to class next Wed. 1/20 (there is no class on Monday remember!):

1. Your completed S.M.A.R.T. goals sheet (both sides)
2. Read "My Name" by Sandra Cisneros (an excerpt from A House on Mango Street). Be prepared to share/write about the story behind your name.

Welcome!

It was fantastic meeting so many interesting and diverse folks yesterday at our first class. I am humbled by your motivation and the thoughts you shared about your educational histories and goals. I look forward to 10 weeks of growth with you all.

Please do not forget to bring back your completed S.M.A.R.T. goals for Wednesday, a calculator, your library card, a pen/pencil, folder, and notebook. You will be taking the math TABE during the majority of the class, so get ready.

Wednesday, 5-8pm everyone. And remember, no class on Monday (MLK Jr.'s Birthday).

Hi, folks!

I hope you had a restful vacation from classes and a happy holiday!

Tonight, from 5-8pm, the registration for the winter cycle of pre-ged classes will take place at the Coney Island branch. Please come with your slip with score so that you can officially enroll in the next cycle of classes. You will not need to stay for the entire three hours, but please, come on time.

Classes will start THIS MONDAY, JANUARY 11TH from 5-8.

Looking forward to seeing you all. Let's start 2010 on the right foot!
